Commonly known as Stihl Saws, after the popular German brand, disc cutters are a ubiquitous tool used across many industries. Available in many configurations, the most commonly used is the hand held disc cutter. Powered by a petrol engine or electric motor, disc cutters are valued for the efficiency with which they can cut hard materials, such as concrete, pipe, brick or asphalt. Rather than using a metal edge to cut, they most commonly use diamond edged blades to grind through hard substances. They can also be used with metal cutting discs to cut through metal, such as rails.
When selecting a disc cutter, there are a number of important features to look for. The size of the blade is vital, as the operator must be able to complete the cut to the full depth needed. It is also important to ensure that the disc cutter has enough power to cut through the material in question. Very hard materials, such as granite, are very demanding and require substantial power to be transmitted to the disc. Larger models such as the K1270 are recommended for such applications.
The needs of the operator also need to be taken into consideration. A more powerful disc cutter will be heavier and produce greater levels of vibration and noise. This means shorter work periods to avoid tiredness or injury. The Husqvarna petrol disc cutters, and electric disc cutters, are amongst the lowest for vibration levels. The K770 has a vibration of just 2.0-2.3m/s² compared to 3.9m/s² on an equivalent STIHL saw.
